I wasn’t sure I would use an action camera enough to warrant the cost, but I decided to try the Go Pro Hero. It was on sale for $199 so I bought it. https://amzn.to/4f79rrL
The camera is small and light.
I will tell you why I sent it back.
The camera takes decent pictures and still videos. If you’re planning is to put the camera in a tripod and use it like that you will likely love it.
The camera does not come with an SD card. You have to buy that separately. I suppose that’s not a huge deal, but you have to figure that out. It doesn’t say it in the advertising.
Unfortunately the SD card I had was too old. So I had to buy a new one.
Then my SD card reader (also older) didn’t like the newer speed, so I decided to buy the cloud subscription.
It was starting to nickel and dime me. Subscriptions, new SD card, a mount for this and a mount for that.
When you plug the camera in, it uploads the videos and pictures to the cloud. This never worked right for me. If I took something small, like a few minute video it worked, anything large just never uploaded.
I decided to video a walk around a hiking trails.
The battery last a little under one hour. That did not impress me.
When I got home I plugged in. It had four videos equaling about one hours worth. The camera reported they were uploading. The next morning, nothing had happened.
I took the card out and copied them to the computer. The stabilization soft works well for small videos and maybe with a higher end computer it would work ok. I have one computer without a graphics card, so it didn’t work. My Microsoft Surface is just not gutsy enough.
So I determine with what I had it would likely take days to turn one hours worth of video into something presentable. That was unexpected.
The small size makes it great for carrying it around, especially if you are carrying it on your hat, but it also make the screen almost useless.
The phone app is ok, but to be extremely useful you need to spent more money.
I suppose if all you want is small short “reels” this camera will fit the bill. If you want a real action camera you’ll need to spend more money.
I tried stabilizing this video (2:33 minutes) with the cloud app and gave up after about 20 minutes. I stabilized it with Microsoft movie maker. Again, the quality of the video didn’t impress me. It was a reasonably sunny day in the afternoon.
These are screen shots of the video.
