Hand Forged 15″ Froe (shingle and riving tool) and Beetle (Mallet for the froe)

Hand Forged 15″ Froe (shingle and riving tool) and Beetle (Mallet for the froe)

I made the froe out of an old implement tine.
The handles are air dried hickory. I rived each handle using the actual froe they would go on. I draw knived to rough shaape then used the 2×72 with 36 grit to refine them. I hand sanded with 150 grit and soaked them in BLO overnight.

The beetle or mallet is made from hophornneam. Hophornneam has a janka hardness of 1850 making it one of the hardest native northeast wood.
