Hickory Stick with a String (Primitive Bow)

I built some selfbows when I was young, or at least watched my Dad make some, I’m not sure I ever actually finished any and if i did they did not work very well. But some 45 or 50 years later I was in the woods one day and decided to cut a small hickory and add a string to it.

It was a very quick and dirty bow from a Hickory sapling. I left the bark on most of it. The tillering was a little off, but it was just a quick project to try it out. I’m surprised how well it works. It was about 28# at 28″

Then after several months later it was just sitting in my shop and someone asked if I would sell it. I chuckled a little and gave it to them. A few weeks later they were telling me what a nice shooting bow it was. This was somebody that actually shot bow too. They asked me if I would put a better handle on it, which I did. But when I had it back in my shop a weighed it again. The surprise was, now it’s draw weight was just over 40#. A note of how moisture content effects efficiency.
